If you have a condition that requires surgery on your lumbar spine, you may benefit from new minimally invasive techniques that can reduce your pain and shorten your recovery time.
Doctors Bowen and Woodall of Birmingham Neurosurgery & Spine were the first neurosurgeons in Birmingham to perform minimally invasive procedures using the METRx System. They have conducted more of these surgeries than any other neurosurgical practice in Alabama.
To perform a surgical procedure on the lower back using the METRx System, your surgeon will make a small (less than 1 inch) incision in the skin over the vertebrae to be treated. He will then insert a series of progressively larger dilators, one around the other, to gradually separate the muscles and create a "tunnel" through which the surgery may be completed.
This is dramatically different from traditional, open spine surgery. The open approach involves making a long incision down the back, stripping large bands of muscle away from the spine and then retracting, or pulling to each side, the surrounding muscles so the surgeon can get a clear view of the vertebrae of the spine to be treated.
The benefits of using this unique, muscle-dilating METRx System are significant:
